About

Preamble

Juan and his partner arrived in the Canary Islands in 2023. They welcome you into their typical Canarian house, whose foundations date back to 1893.

For a peaceful and relaxing stay

Although there is a bus stop 50 meters from the house, a car is essential to reach Casa Roja, which is located at an altitude of 550 meters and 5 km from the highway. The house is located halfway between the southern (35 km) and northern (40 km) airports. A winding but wide road in perfect condition will take you to your destination.

If needed, a well-stocked grocery store is located 50 meters from the house. The village of about 900 inhabitants has a medical center, a pharmacy, a gas station, three grocery stores, and two bars. The church offers ad hoc services.

Nearby curiosities:

The famous Camino Real, the first road built, encircles the island and runs alongside Casa Roja. Sometimes perfectly passable by car, it is often only accessible on foot.

About ten minutes by car from the house, you have the pleasant natural swimming pool of Punta Prieta.

In Güimar, visit the Finca Canarias Aloe Vera. Aloe vera is an African plant with numerous health benefits, and the Canarian species is considered one of the best. https://www.fincacanarias.com

Macaronesia

The Canary Islands archipelago covers an area of 7,447 km². Since 1927, the islands have been divided into two provinces: Las Palmas (the eastern islands: Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (the western islands: Tenerife, La Gomera, Hierro and La Palma).

The Canary Islands are part of Macaronesia, a geographical area comprising the volcanic Canary Islands (Spanish-speaking), the Madeira Archipelago (Portuguese-speaking), including the uninhabited Selvagens Islands (wild), the Azores Archipelago (Portuguese-speaking) and the Cape Verde Islands (Portuguese-speaking).

This complex is part of a cross-border cooperation program between the governments of Spain, Portugal, and Cape Verde, as these islands share common environmental and historical characteristics, resulting in numerous similarities in terms of flora and fauna. Thanks to its flora and fauna, Macaronesia is one of the most important natural regions in the world.

Flag

The flag of the Canary Islands is formed by three vertical bands: white, blue, and yellow. The blue band consists of a shield with seven silver islands, topped with a gold crown and a silver ribbon with the motto "Oceano" and framed by two dogs representing the island's two provinces.

Let us remember that the word Canary Islands comes from the Latin canis meaning "dog", due to the many dogs that populated the islands when the Spanish discovered them in the 15th century; the dogs on the coat of arms recall the Prensa Canaria, the breed specific to the Canaries, which has nothing to do with the birds called "canaries"
